Plastic pollution is a big problem because animals get sick and they can die from it, and we harm our water supply when we pollute.
Animals get sick and die from plastic pollution. Because we let plastic bags float everywhere, animals can die from it. One example is when a small male pilot whale died from eating 17 US pounds of plastic bags in southern Thailand. As a result of years and years of plastic pollution, there are tons of microplastic beads in the water around the world. One of these places is the Great Lakes in Michigan. Many small animals such as plankton, the main source of food for the ocean and an air supplier for us, can die from eating micro-plastic beads.
We also harm our water supply when we pollute. Since we are so careless about our used plastic, like single use bottles, single use plastic washes up on beaches all around them. For example, if someone throws a plastic bottle in the ocean from Florida, it might end up in Australia or England or even Japan. Due to many people not caring about plastic pollution anymore, micro-plastic gets into our water. When we use toothpaste that has micro-beads, we are using plastic to clean our teeth. Then, when they go down the drain, they end up in our water supply. As a result of people not doing mass plastic cleanups like they should, nowhere in the ocean is safe from plastic pollution. As an example, a plastic bag was found at the bottom of the Mariana Trench
So, next time you are careless with plastic, think about how it will affect you and your environment. Make sure that no one in your group left plastic behind. Remember even though it means less for you to do, it will have a big impact on the environment.
