A New Type of Fashion
Fashion changes in the blink of an eye: one day, your high-waisted shorts are in, but the next day, everyone is wearing long leather coats. This year, the shows were different from those of past years, because of the vast change in advertising for clothing that has come to reflect all body types. Luxury fashion is making this change as well.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) concluded on February 18th. There were over 150 NYFW designers this year. From New York, models and designers head to London, then to Milan, and finally to Paris. Some shows were described as elaborate, and others were inspirational. The Michael Kors show, with its fringe feathers and sparkling sequence, had an image of flirtation and a feminine aesthetic, while the Zac Posen show focused more on diversity among its models. If there is one thing to take away from NYFW, it’s that this year has been the start of a new era.
The fashion industry has been evolving for years, yet the biggest changes are taking place right now. Since 2015’s Fashion Week, models have become more diverse and cultural appropriation has been diminishing. Not only is the industry diversifying in race, but it is also changing the standard of beauty on the runway. So far this year, we have seen plus size models, such as Ashley Graham, and disabled models, such as Madeline Stuart who has down syndrome. There is even a new hash tag, “Black Models Matter.” This change in the standard of beauty is increasingly important in our society, which has so many young girls looking up to models that are 5’10” and made out of skin and bones. These new models help show society that having a different body types and features are okay. Even if people still love to criticize fashion week, there is an amazing change happening right under our noses.
