Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard
By Hannah S.
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of the Summer is the first book in Rick Riordan’s new series, another continuation of the Percy Jackson series. Spoilers will follow, so read at your own risk!
Magnus Chase is a homeless teen orphan, making do on what food he can find. His mother died not long ago in a fire, in which Magnus saw some mysterious wolves. The story begins with Magnus’ friend Blitz telling him that people are looking for him, a man and a teenage girl. Magnus runs, hiding from them, but runs into them later and discovers them to be his uncle Fredrick and his cousin Annabeth. Throughout the book Magnus is introduced into the world of Norse mythology and the Norse gods, one of which is his father. He meets Sam Al-Abbas, daughter of Loki, and finds out his homeless friends Blitzen and Hearthstone have known about this the whole time. Blitzen turns out to be a dwarf, and Hearthstone an elf. With the help of these three, Magnus must find the Sword of the Summer and stop Surt from starting Ragnarok, or doomsday.
Throughout the book you get to know Riordan’s wonderful characters. Each get an equally well thought through personality, each individual and unique. One of the main characters in this book is deaf and communicates through ASL, Alf Sign Language. Another is Muslim and wears a hijab. There are also several references to the previous series, Heroes of Olympus. This book was thrilling from beginning to end, including several of the Norse gods, and even at one point referencing the Thor movies. If you are looking to learn more about Norse mythology, or just looking for an interesting fall read, this is the book for you.
