By Rebecca H.
Now that the new year is upon us, we are right in the middle of flu season and while the Centers for Disease Control recommend the influenza vaccine is the best course of action for preventing the flu, there are many additional ways to stay healthy along with getting the vaccine.
First, familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of influenza, including:
• Body or muscle aches
• Sore throat
• Stuffy nose
The flu is different from the common cold, and it tends to come on suddenly. Influenza is spread by many different ways including coughs, sneezes, as well as contact with surfaces that has the virus on it. That’s why washing your hands with soap and water is one of the most important ways to protect yourself against the flu virus. Using hand sanitizer regularly is another way to protect the spread of germs that could cause influenza.
If you end up catching the flu, the Centers for Disease Control recommends that the best course of action is to stay home until after your fever as subsided for at least 24 hours. While you are sick, be sure to monitor your temperature, drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, and rest. Hopefully these tips will help you and your family stay healthy during flu season!
