Facebook vs. Instagram
By L. Miner
Facebook and Instagram are both incredible social media platforms, but they are incredible for different reasons! Facebook is better for advertising and selling, while Instagram thrives more on just sharing about your adventures with friends and family. As a matter of fact, Facebook Inc. owns Instagram, and for that reason they have a ton of similarities!
Facebook and Instagram both have built-in messaging services. Facebook’s service is called “Messenger” and Instagram’s is called “Direct”. Another similarity is the fact that both apps have cameras with built-in face filters available, and a feature that you can “add to your story” which means you can post something and it only stays up for 24 hours. Yet another similarity is the fact that you can post pictures, caption them, and tag people directly in the image. There are 2.27 billion users on Facebook as of October 30th, 2018, which makes Instagram look small with only 700 million active accounts as of 2017. I believe Instagram is a better app for people under the age of 18, because Instagram is more of a social platform while Facebook is more used for sales and advertisement.
While there are many things about the 2 apps that are alike there are also many differences. One strong difference is the age range of users. Instagram’s average user age is 9-21, which is a younger audience, while Facebook has an average age range of 17-70, which is an older generation. Another major difference is “friending” people. On Facebook, you have to “friend” someone to see their private page, which means you can see their content if they accept the request, but they also see yours. However, on Instagram, you can choose whether or not people have to request to follow you, and you aren’t forced to follow them, even if they follow you.
The last difference is “Groups”. On Instagram groups don’t exist, but on Facebook you can join a group, which is a page where people can post questions or important information or even a funny meme that only the people in that group can see. Most groups require requests to join for privacy purposes.
Additionally, during a recent survey it was discovered that Instagram is actually a preferred social platform for people using mobile devices, however Facebook is preferred by people who use desktop computers and the like. I personally think that Facebook should have a higher age limit because it is easier to accidentally let someone follow you and see your content.
Facebook and Instagram both have incredible opportunities and resources depending on what you’re looking for! They are similar and different all at the same time. I think for my age group Instagram is better because it’s a good way to communicate with friends in a safer environment. It’s a lot of fun to be on the internet and be able to share your life experiences with people, but make sure to stay safe!
