Prevent Animal Abuse
By: Ainsley K.
There are many types of animal abuse spread across the world. Some are intentional, but others unintentional. In this article you will learn different methods of abuse, how to recognize animal abuse, ways to help prevent animal cruelty, and some facts regarding animal abuse.
Here are three ways that an animal can be abused and an explanation of them.
In the USA alone, there are over 10,000 puppy mills and they are one of the most popular ways an animal can be abused. It is a big commercial dog breed factory where profit is the top priority over the health and safety of a dog. In a puppy mill a dog would be housed with many other dogs in a small cage that is unclean, and the dogs are given very little to no vet care, food, water, or socialization. A litter is born, and the female is given little-to-no time to recover between breeding this can have a very bad outcome, once the female dog can’t produce anymore she is then killed. At eight weeks old puppies are given out to the public through internet, newspaper ads, and even flea markets without health inspection, a bath, or proper training skills.
Dog fighting is the most horrible method of animal abuse. Dog fighters use drugs and steroids to boost muscle and make them more aggressive. Dogs that are going to be used for fighting are generally segregated. Dog fighters also have the dog’s ears cropped and their tails docked so that other dogs don’t have a place to grab during a fighting session. Fighting dogs spend most of their time on a short, thick, bulky chain. Most of the unvalued dogs are given very little food, water, care, socialization, and/or housing. In, 2007 NFL star Michael Vick was arrested for owning a dog fighting rink and then lying to the police. Vick spent 5 years in prison and lost over 16 million dollars in court. When Vick tried to return to the NFL, his former team, also known as the Atlanta Falcons would not accept his return.
The last type I will share is Animal hoarding. Animal hoarding can be a method of abuse that is unintentional. Animal hoarding occurs when a person adopts more animals than they can care for which then leads to animal neglect. When a person adopts too many animals and then doesn’t take care of them, that animal might starve or become dehydrated. In the US there is only allowed four animals per household that is under eight weeks old.
Below there are a few ways to help control or prevent animal abuse:
