Their Past, Our Present, Your Future
By Connie N.
There are many females that have influenced today’s society. Everyone has heard the phrase, “Behind every great man there’s a great woman” but no one knows where this came from. Meryll Frost was the one who said this in 1945 and was quoted as such in the 1946 edition of The Port Arthur News. Although, some believe that this phrase may be even older than 70 years old. Either way, this has become the slogan for feminists all over. Whether or not women need men, as stated in the quote, “a women needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”, there still hasn’t been a female president. However, that’s not to say it won’t happen. Former first lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, former president Woodrow Wilson’s second wife, was considered to be America’s first female president. Since her husbands’ health was failing, she had the important task of choosing what he would spend his time on, so as not to ‘waste time’ since he had such little time left. Another example of how many of America’s former first ladies’ have affected our lives today would be Sarah Childress Polk, former first lady of James K. Polk. She spent the latter of her husbands’ presidency influencing America’s politics. She entertained both sides’ leaders during the American Civil War, and when she finally passed, she was mourned not only by family and close friends, but also by the American public who had come to love her and treasured her as a link to the past and also as a voice for the future. These two women are only a fraction of those who made a difference in the world so that women can live better than they did in the past. They started it and it is up to us to continue so that our children can know about the past and see what they can do for the future.
